PROF. CAHYADI SETIAWAN APPOINTED AS COORDINATOR OF THE UNDERGRADUATE AND MASTER'S PROGRAMS IN GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION AT FISH UNJ

Jakarta, July 22, 2026 — The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law (FISH), Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), extends its warmest congratulations to Prof. Dr. Cahyadi Setiawan, S.Si., M.Si. on his appointment as the Coordinator of the Undergraduate (S1) and Master's (S2) Programs in Geography Education at FISH UNJ.

This appointment reflects the University's confidence in Prof. Cahyadi's leadership to strengthen academic governance and advance the development of both Geography Education programs. Under his leadership, the programs are expected to further enhance excellence in teaching, research, community engagement, and human resource development across undergraduate and graduate levels.

As a distinguished scholar in geography, Prof. Cahyadi has established a strong academic reputation through his expertise in soil geography, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), land use change, disaster studies, and urban environmental issues. In November 2025, he was officially inaugurated as a Professor of Soil Geography at Universitas Negeri Jakarta.

During his inaugural professorial lecture, titled "The Application of Geographical Science in Identifying Land Subsidence in Jakarta," Prof. Cahyadi highlighted land subsidence as one of Jakarta's most pressing environmental challenges. He emphasized the importance of geospatial data and evidence-based policymaking in mitigating long-term environmental risks, particularly for the sustainability of Jakarta's coastal regions.

His commitment to impactful research is further demonstrated through numerous studies addressing strategic societal issues. Among them is his research on the application of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify buffer zones surrounding the Plumpang Fuel Storage Depot. The study contributes to disaster risk reduction, residential safety, and spatial planning around critical national infrastructure.

Prof. Cahyadi has also contributed extensively to research on land-use change using Landsat satellite imagery, pyroclastic material mapping following the Mount Sinabung eruption, pedestrian accessibility to public transportation in Central Jakarta, and disaster preparedness in schools and local communities. These scholarly contributions reflect his commitment to applying geographical science not only for academic advancement but also as a practical solution to environmental and societal challenges.

In the field of disaster communication, Prof. Cahyadi has participated in research evaluating the effectiveness of digital mapping platforms for flood risk communication within the Ciliwung River Basin. The study compared ArcGIS StoryMaps, government geospatial portals, and PetaBencana.id as tools for disseminating disaster information to the public. The findings underscore the importance of integrating geospatial technology with public communication to improve disaster awareness and community resilience.

Beyond research, Prof. Cahyadi has actively supported disaster education through learning activities and disaster preparedness simulations involving university students. These initiatives reflect his commitment to delivering contextual, practice-oriented geography education that equips students to address real-world environmental challenges.

His extensive academic experience provides a strong foundation for advancing the Undergraduate and Master's Programs in Geography Education at FISH UNJ. Greater integration between the two programs is expected to strengthen curriculum development, expand collaborative research among faculty members and students, increase scientific publications, and foster educational innovation addressing sustainability, disaster resilience, spatial planning, and environmental management.

Prof. Cahyadi's leadership is also expected to broaden the national and international networks of the Geography Education programs. Previously, he played an active role in international academic initiatives, including master's thesis examinations involving overseas examiners, marking an important milestone in strengthening the program's global engagement and academic reputation.

The Undergraduate and Master's Programs in Geography Education at FISH UNJ play a strategic role in preparing educators, researchers, and professionals capable of applying spatial perspectives to solve contemporary societal challenges.
