Jakarta, 21 Mei 2026 – he Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FISH UNJ), held an international general lecture titled “The World History: History of Costa Rica and Noticeable Achievements” on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Maftuchah Yusuf Auditorium, R. Dewi Sartika Building, UNJ Campus. The lecture featured Francisco José Masís Holdridge, M.Sc., Head of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Costa Rica to Indonesia, as the keynote speaker.
This international general lecture was part of FISH UNJ’s commitment to expanding global networks, strengthening students’ international perspectives, and opening academic dialogue on the history, culture, and development achievements of countries around the world. The event was officially opened by the Secretary General of UNJ, Prof. Dr. Siono, M.Si., who delivered remarks on behalf of the Rector of UNJ, Prof. Dr. Komarudin, M.Si. The event was also attended by faculty leaders, lecturers, and students.
Moderated by Muhammad Hasmi Yanuardi, S.S., M.Hum., the session explored the history of Costa Rica, its rich pre-Columbian cultural heritage, and the country’s notable achievements in education, environment, technology, and social development. In his presentation, Francisco explained how Costa Rica has grown into a country widely recognized for its strong commitment to peace, democracy, environmental sustainability, and quality of life.
One of the key points highlighted in the lecture was Costa Rica’s historic decision to abolish its military institution on December 1, 1948. This policy marked an important milestone in the country’s development direction, enabling the national budget to be redirected toward education, public health, environmental preservation, and renewable energy development. This strategic choice has helped transform Costa Rica into a nation known for its commitment to peace, sustainability, and high-tech development in the modern era.
The event was also closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Through this international general lecture, FISH UNJ not only enriched students’ academic understanding of global history and development, but also strengthened awareness of the importance of education, peace, institutional governance, environmental sustainability, and international partnerships as foundations for future development.
At the end of the event, FISH UNJ presented a token of appreciation to the speaker in recognition of his presence and contribution to the international general lecture. The program concluded with a group photo session involving invited guests, lecturers, and student participants.
