South Jakarta, May 10, 2026 — The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FISH UNJ), through lecturers from the Communication Science Study Program and the Public Relations and Digital Communication Study Program, carried out a community service program at Mat Peci Green Camp, Sekolah Sungai Ciliwung, Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The program, entitled “Empowering the Mat Peci Community through Partnership for Strengthening Media Literacy,” reflected FISH UNJ’s commitment to advancing higher education that not only develops academic knowledge but also contributes directly to society and the environment.
The community service program involved several lecturers from the Communication Science Study Program of FISH UNJ, namely Nada Arina Romli, M.I.Kom., Mega Ayu Permatasari, M.Si., Noprita Herari, M.I.Kom., Dr. M. Fikri Akbar, M.Si., and Sandy Allifiansyah, Ph.D. Lecturers from the Public Relations and Digital Communication Study Program also participated, including Wina Puspita Sari, M.Si., Afina Ruqayyah, M.I.Kom., and Rico Fernando Siregar, M.I.Kom.
The program was further strengthened by the presence of an international guest lecturer from the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, Mohd. Nur Najmi Nuji, M.A. His participation expanded the international collaborative dimension of FISH UNJ in developing communication studies, particularly in the areas of media literacy, environmental communication, and community-based empowerment.
Mat Peci Green Camp is part of Sekolah Sungai Ciliwung, managed by the Mat Peci Ciliwung Community. The community has been widely recognized for its active role in environmental education, Ciliwung River conservation, and the empowerment of residents living along the riverbanks. The activity was also attended by the founder of the Mat Peci Ciliwung Community, Usman Firdaus, together with local residents, youth community members, and children from the Mat Peci community.
Through this program, FISH UNJ sought to strengthen the community’s capacity to understand, manage, and disseminate information responsibly. Media literacy has become increasingly important for local communities, as environmental movements today require not only direct ecological action but also the ability to communicate their initiatives through digital media to reach a wider public.
Nada Arina Romli, M.I.Kom., stated that the community service program was not only focused on environmental education but also on strengthening community independence through the management of local potential, including community gardens. According to her, environment-based empowerment can serve as an entry point for improving family welfare and strengthening social solidarity.
Meanwhile, Wina Puspita Sari, M.Si., emphasized the importance of digital communication in expanding the impact of community movements. She explained that positive initiatives carried out by local communities need to be properly packaged and communicated so that they can inspire a broader audience.
“Digital communication will position Mat Peci not only as a local community, but also as a role model for environmental movements,” she said.
This activity is aligned with FISH UNJ’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The strengthening of media literacy and environmental education contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education, as it promotes inclusive and contextual community-based learning. The community empowerment and family economic strengthening aspects are also relevant to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, particularly in encouraging community independence through local potential.
In addition, the program’s location in the Ciliwung River area strongly relates to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13: Climate Action, as it encourages public awareness of urban environmental sustainability and community participation in protecting river ecosystems. The collaboration among FISH UNJ, local communities, residents, and international partners also reflects the implementation of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Through this community service program, FISH UNJ reaffirmed its role as a higher education institution that actively builds cross-sector collaboration. The synergy among academics, communities, society, and international partners is expected to continue developing educational programs that create meaningful impact in strengthening media literacy, advancing environmental movements, and improving social welfare.
