Jakarta, April 26, 2026 - The seventh session of Eurasia 2026 featured Prof. Dr. Robertus Robet, M.A. as the keynote speaker in a seminar themed “Becoming Liquid Society: Digitalization and Informational Society.” The session was moderated by Fajar Aditya Nugroho, M.Par., who opened the event before leading the discussion and question-and-answer session.
In his presentation, Prof. Robert highlighted the major transformations in human life brought about by digitalization. He explained that technological development has made humans increasingly dependent on digital systems. One example he discussed was Neil Harbisson, who implanted an antenna in his head to access information, illustrating how the boundaries between humans and technology are becoming increasingly blurred. This phenomenon, according to Prof. Robert, shows that the idea of a “pure authentic” human being is becoming more difficult to identify, as technology has become deeply embedded in everyday life. This perspective aligns with the concept of Cyborg Society, where humans and technology are no longer seen as separate entities. Prof. Robert also presented data showing that internet users in Indonesia reached 229.4 million in 2025, with a penetration rate of 80.66 percent. The majority of users come from the younger generation, or digital natives, whose main digital activities include social media use, information access, online transactions, and digital entertainment. The discussion was then connected to Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity, which describes the shift from a stable society to one that is fluid, flexible, and filled with uncertainty. In this condition, social relationships become weaker, identities become more temporary, and power is no longer concentrated in institutions but distributed across networks. This idea was also reinforced through Manuel Castells’ concept of the network society.
Following the presentation, the moderator provided a brief response before opening the question-and-answer session. Questions were raised by Muhammad Aldi from Sociology Education and Marco from Communication Science. The event continued with the presentation of an appreciation plaque to the speaker, a group photo session, and closing remarks by the moderator.
The session concluded by emphasizing that digitalization not only brings convenience but also transforms social structures, ways of thinking, and patterns of human interaction in an increasingly fluid or liquid society. []
