Museum-Based History Learning: Collaboration between FISH UNJ and the Maritime Museum

As a form of institutional commitment, the agenda continued with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, and the Maritime Museum. The signing ceremony was followed by the exchange of souvenirs as a symbol of partnership and shared commitment to supporting the development of education, particularly in the fields of history, culture, and museum studies.

The main session featured a guest lecture delivered by Firman Faturohman on the theme “Designing Museum-Based History Learning.” In his presentation, he explained various approaches to utilizing museums as sources of historical learning that can provide students with more direct, interactive, and relevant learning experiences. Museums, he emphasized, should not only be seen as places for preserving historical objects, but also as educational spaces that enrich the learning process through direct interaction with historical sources.

This agenda is strongly aligned with Universitas Negeri Jakarta’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education. Through museum-based history learning, students are provided with access to inclusive, contextual, and meaningful learning experiences. The activity also supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, especially in relation to the preservation of cultural heritage and the strengthening of public awareness of history and national maritime identity. In addition, the collaboration between FISH UNJ and the Maritime Museum reflects the spirit of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through a partnership between higher education and cultural institutions in strengthening the educational ecosystem.

From the perspective of the Key Performance Indicators (IKU) for higher education, this activity contributes to the strengthening of IKU 2, which encourages students to gain learning experiences outside the campus through engagement with external partners and learning resources. It also supports IKU 3 by providing opportunities for lecturers to conduct academic activities beyond the campus through institutional and academic collaboration with the Maritime Museum. Furthermore, the signing of the MoU between FISH UNJ and the Maritime Museum also supports IKU 6, which emphasizes cooperation between study programs and relevant partners, including government institutions, cultural organizations, and social institutions that contribute to the development of students’ knowledge and competencies.

The entire program ran smoothly and received high enthusiasm from the participants. The event concluded with a prayer as an expression of gratitude for the successful implementation of the activity and with the hope that the collaboration between FISH UNJ and the Maritime Museum will continue to make positive contributions to the development of education, history learning, and cultural preservation in the future.
